Chronicling the lives of the Kramer beagles and their hard-working domestic help.

I can help

Posted by laurie on June 6, 2012

Yesterday was Commencement Day at Princeton, and they encourage all non-essential staff to stay home if possible to avoid a parking apocalypse. Whenever I work at home I catch up on the laundry and Stanley likes to help with the folding. He doesn’t actually fold per se, but he helps all the same.

My Charlie and Gigi like to “help” to. Now the feline friend, Elphie, also likes to help.

I think they think our laundry isn’t good enough to wear without a little hair or smell on them. Drool seems to be the weapon of choice. :)

Oh, this is too funny! Saturday is laundry day in our house, and we brought Willow home late Friday night. So Saturday morning, she was trying to help sort the laundry by pulling items out of the baskets on the kitchen floor. Stopped as soon as I told her no. Laundry-sorting is the kid’s job, lol! And yes, all clothing is improved with a little beagle hair. Don’t you like how tricolors have hair that contrasts with any color of clothing? :-)

Baci helps by stealing all the small items, such as socks, underwear and washcloths. He waits at the top of the stairs for me to chase him, thus ensuring that I combine aerobics with laundry folding. Sometimes he practices beagle feng shui by unfolding the laundry and rearranging the piles. I always appreciate the help.

Daisy Mae likes to steal laundry. All my socks end up in her bed. She guards them as if they are the crown jewels. Timmy helps though–He shakes the dirt out of each sock.

  5. I remember seeing a picture of Sherm and Stanley helping to pack for your vacation, by lying on the clothes on the bed that were waiting to go in the suit cases. What is it about clean clothes on a bed – the beagles can’t resist ? Both of mine also love to climb on top of any clothing on the bed. Holly also loves the laundry basket. I can find her pretty much – at least once a day, lying in it on top of the dirty clothes – so I guess it is just not the clean ones that attract her. We have 6 doggie beds scattered around in various rooms of the house, but she still prefers the laundry basket.

My dirty laundry gets stirred, not shaken. And not sorted. Anything that hits the floor is nesting material and we have a couple of nesting champions in our midst. Whatever they’re nesting in goes from one end of the house to the other. It gets fluffed and floofed and batted around more than in the washing machine. And then they lay on the floor, not their nest.

The day we brought Lucy home from the Houston Beagle Rescue she walked around the house exploring. She found the laundry basket and don’t ask me how but came out to the kitchen with my husband’s tshirt on – head through the neck and everything. Guess that was her way of saying this is my house now! She loves rolling around in his clothes and still tries on some outfits every now and then. Next time Laurie asks for pictures I’ll submit one of her modeling.

Kramer helps by rolling ALL over our dirty towels. I’ve gotten to the point where I just throw them on the floor, let Kramer roll and rootch, and then bring them to the laundry. Gandolf could not care less about clean or dirty. He’s an easier dog in some ways. :)
On a side note – National Take Your Dog to Work Day is June 22nd. We’re able to here, at the library, and I plan to bring Kramer. It’ll not only be in celebration of rescue and adoption dogs, but (if all goes well) dogs who have cancer who still embrace life. :) So Kramer’s coming to work with me that day. It’s the Best work day, Ever! :)

So far, none of ours, including the late great Whisky Girl Beagle, have shown much interest in the laundry; although, given half a chance, Bartles the Basset will try to steal socks. So far, with no success. Bartles does however, sit on my husband’s feet EVERY DAY and EVERY TIME he puts on his shoes… to the point that Rick has to move him out of the way; Rick has decided to buy Bartles his own shoes so hopefully he’ll give up interest on Rick’s :)

Also, I have news! I “temporarily” rescued a mutt last Friday. Her name is Quincy, and her owners lost their house to foreclosure in Santa Barbara. Friday was literally her last day… one of the neighbor ladies is big into rescue and no one else responded but me… I couldn’t let that poor pup go to the pound… she’s 11 or 12, a mutt, and has arthritis… not fair that she is now homeless… so I’m on a mission to find her a forever home as soon as possible… Thank goodness my husband loves me… he’s not too happy with me bringing her home, but he knows I’m one big giant marshmellow.

Bless your heart, Harper. That is SO awesome to rescue a dog, especially one that is near the end of her life. You made my heart happy. Thank you!!

Yes THANK YOU Harper. My husband is the same way, but truth is he is a bigger one than me, his bark is just bigger than his bite.

Pin a rose on your nose, Harper. You have done a wonderful thing. You gotta know Whiskey Girl is giving you a big dew claw-thumbs up.

My heart goes out to anyone who has lost their home to foreclosure. It was good of the neighbor lady to rescue Quincy and so kind of you, Harper, to respond and try to find her a forever home. Thank you for sharing this story. Please keep us posted on your mission. I think we must all be marshmellows at heart.

Bless you, Harper. It’s such a shame that a dog that old is looking for a home at her age. I hope she finds a warm, loving, forever home (with you, maybe???)

I saw a sign in a catalog that said ‘No outfit is complete without dog hair’. So true! Onyx likes to help with the laundry. Socks are her preference, although she has been known on occasion to drag underwear out of the laundry basket.

Harper- Thank you for rescuing Quincy.
