As seen on TV!

Posted by laurie on August 17, 2010

I’m not a big TV watcher and I’ve certainly never ordered anything from one of those intolerably long and repetitive commercials but when I saw an ad the other night for a stuffing-less dog toy I was intrigued. Not enough to order one but when I saw the very toy at Petsmart the next day I decided it was karma and put it in my basket. This is a long toy with no stuffing but with a squeaker at each end. The boys have really enjoyed playing with it, and only time will tell if they feel a compelling urge to rip it apart despite its emptiness. Anyone ahead of me on this one?

  1. My 10 month old beagle Moxy has one of these and it’s her favorite toy. She will stand at the top of the stairs with it balled up in her mouth crying to go outside so she can burry it.

You can also knot old socks together in a very long “rope.”

We have a couple of these – we call them pelts. “Eviscerated for your convenience!” They’re still (mostly) in their original condition, but I fear for the squeakers.

I’d like to know how this works out, after the ‘newness’ wears off- I’ve considered them for ours, but wondered if they’d miss the ‘bulk’ that the stuffing brings.

Our 3 got them for Christmas – we call them Flat Skunk, Flat Fox, and Flat furry thing (not real sure what it is). I had forgotten about them until you put this up. I am thinking they have been relagated to the toy box at this point. At first they were great for tug of war. I think I will dig them out when I get home and see if there is still interest!

We have two of them, although, the squeaker in fox has worn out. My little beagle girl(Midgie) loves them, because she can almost stuff the whole thing in her mouth!

Our Lab takes good care of his Hedgehog and various other stuffed squeaky toys, but the Beagle is like so many here — she loves to pull the stuffing out of everything (except her beds); maybe I should try a couple of those (saw them last weekend at Petsmart too!).
My story on the infomercials: I was channel surfing and got sucked into an infomercial on Dogpedic (trademark?) beds (I NEVER watch infomercials); Our Lab has two bad back knees and gets gimpy; so we bought one for him; took some time for him to really try it out; I can’t say that it’s helped his knees yet, but he seems to like it, mostly. It’s got the memory foam stuff; and it took my putting one of his old beds on top of it for him to try it out.
Keep us updated on the destuffed toys.

Seamus also has a bad knee and gets gimpy but we started him on glucosamine and it really has helped…I would be interested in knowing how the bed does because I would get him one. Now is there an infomercial on getting rid of ear infections in beagles? Seamus seems to get a lot of them!!!

Yes! Old beagles and ear yeast leading to infections…oh, what a plague!

I started putting a good teaspoon of plain yogurt in their meals. In the summer I replace the evening spoonful with a frozen yogurt treat. (super easy to make)

Not a single yeasty in over a year because of it. Even his paws smell better. Doc says it’s probably one of the easiest ways for older dogs to keep their chemistry good.

Wow, I’m going to try that. Gomez has had problems with ear ick ever since he was a puppy, and he’s allergic to all the prescription ear drops. I’ve been doing the vinegar and water cleaning thing but it doesn’t seem to help that much. Yogurt treats it is!

I’ll keep you updated on the bed… although expensive, if you buy two the second one is cheaper…
Great info on the yogurt… I’m going to try it with our Beagle.
JD (the lab) gets daily glucosomine and sometimes doggie aspirin…. they also have cookies with glucosomine in them… his “treat”.

If you click my link there I have an entry on how I make them. Some people use ice cube trays but the sharp edges aren’t super fun when goggies carry it to their “special treat don’t bother me” caves. 🙂

Thanks much for the link… neat page, tho’ I haven’t had time to peruse yet (at work on lunch)….
I’m definitely stopping at the store on my way home tonight for plain yogurt.

Elvis ADORES his raccoon (he is, after all, part beagle-part coonhound); the squeaker stopped working in the raccoon’s head fairly quickly, though it’s still inside (it hasn’t been ripped up yet); to be fair, I don’t let him play with it unsupervised. I have a fox waiting to be played with when the raccoon wears out.

But then again, he ADORES socks tied together, too.

Hope yours last longer than ours! 1 yr old beagle Snoop ripped the squeaker out of the fox in less than 10 minutes.Had to throw it out the follwing day,was in pieces.

All this talk of beagles and their squeaker toys– Onyx will sometimes dig into the bottom of her toy box and find a toy she hasn’t played with in a couple months. The first thing she does is check it’s squeaker, and if it still works, she sets her mind to making it stop- either by squeaking it until it’s worn out, or by pulling it out.

  11. I had a “flat pig” for quite awhile – it had 5 squeakers – lasted well w/my multiple hound dogs but I kept freaking out when I drove home and saw this flat body in my yard – was it a dog or a toy? I finally had to toss it so I would have more peace :).

Just bought Scooby a flat raccoon for his birthday last month. The flat raccoon looks very similar to a fur collar off an old winter jacket from the 80’s that he loved playing with. We call it his fur. “Has anyone seen Scooby’s fur?” lol Anyways he likes the flat raccoon just as much as his “fur”.

Our yorkie has the fox, frog and duck. She is seven months old and has had all tree for about four months with very little damage. The foxes ears has the most damage. George (5 year old beagle) takes them outside when he has a chance. Gracie (George’s sister) ignores all toys.

Our two year old beagle is notorious for tearing apart toys to get at that stuffing goodness. We even tried one of those “tiger tested” toys, which managed only to delay the inevitable for about an hour. I thought one of these stuffing free toys would be perfect for him….

Ten minutes later I was presented with ribbons of fur and two squeakers. *sigh*

We have four of these flat animals and even though all the squeakers no longer work they are still intact. our beagles received these for Christmas. We found ours at Tractor Supply (TSC) They are played with every day by three beagles either playing tug of war or making the squeakers squeak.
