Another report from beagle camp…

Posted by courtneayparsons on October 18, 2010

I am happy to announce another fantastic weekend with the Kramer boys here at Beagle Camp Lawrenceville. With the cooler weather this weekend, much (MUCH) time was spent with humans and beagles huddled on the couch watching movies and football.

A Stanley blanket

A Sherman blanket

Stanley and Maggie took breaks from the huddle to play, usually with the nearby NylaBones…

Stanley smiles for the camera with his NylaBone...

...while Maggie looks on wondering whether the time is right to make a grab for Stanley's NylaBone, which is obviously far better than the one between her paws at the moment.

Sherman just watches those silly beagles from the couch. He knows that quality time with the warm humans is the way to go…

…which, as you can tell, suits me just fine!

Peekaboo

Posted by laurie on October 15, 2010

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my shower! This is pretty much what it’s like, except for the water. Yesterday morning Phillip took the boys out while I went for a run. I got home first, stepped into the shower, and a few minutes later was greeted by a little nose poking aside the shower curtain. It was hilarious. Reminded me of the time in college when the door to the study room I was in opened and in came a gorilla. Not a real gorilla (one of the Halloween species) but it freaked me out nonetheless. Stanley was far less menacing.

26 vertebrae and let’s keep it that way

Posted by laurie on October 14, 2010

Okay, I need some clever suggestions on how to keep Sherman from jumping off the top of the couch onto the floor. Top of the couch is his absolute favorite spot and whenever Stanley dashes out the doggy door, Sherm follows him. He goes right from the top, doesn’t bother to jump to the seat first. Short of moving the furniture I’m not sure what to do. Ideas?

LCK Book Review

Posted by laurie on October 13, 2010

I am currently reading Numbered Account, by Christopher Reich. Not as good as his recent trilogy (Rules of Deception, Rules of Vengeance, Rules of Betrayal) but good nevertheless. Next up is Room: A Novel, by Emma Donoghue. I’m approaching it with some trepidation, but the reviews are so outstanding I think it’s worth my effort.

Sherman doesn’t want to read, he wants me to pet him, of course, which I can do pretty easily thanks to my one-handed Kindle! By the way, I upgraded to the Kindle 3. It’s lighter, smaller, turns pages faster and has better contrast. It’s too easy to hit the next and previous pages by mistake, though, so I’m having to learn how to hold it just at the top and bottom. My sister inherited my Kindle 2 and I believe she should get it in the mail today.

Elliot and Mia

Posted by laurie on October 12, 2010

Is this cute or what? Mia used Elliot to climb into her standing position. Little Mia is just a week short of one year old. This was taken Saturday, and on Sunday her dad Bryan bundled her into the stroller and pushed her for the 26.2 miles of the Portland marathon! He had to stop a few times (diaper change, etc.) but still managed to finish in under 3:20. WOW! Mia’s parents might start thinking about a cross-country scholarship. She has 17 years to train!

Paging Martha Stewart

Posted by laurie on October 11, 2010

Project Organize moved from the kitchen into the bedroom this weekend. Not as exciting as you might think. We cleaned out the closet, the bookshelf, and our nightstands. I found New Yorkers from 2009 under mine. After making neat piles of his t-shirts, Phillip decided to do something with all the loose change we had sitting around. I think we might be able to squeeze a vacation of this.

The boys served as able assistants. Here they are deciding how they’ll split up the various tasks.

For refreshments, they got to chew on this piece of deer antler, which was (of course) in Phillip’s side of the closet.

More fun with Photoshop

Posted by laurie on October 8, 2010

I promise I won’t make this a regular thing, but isn’t this a pretty cool rendition of one of September’s photos? If you want to try this sort of thing yourself in Photoshop, choose Filter->Texture->Grain->Speckle. How I found it I don’t know.

And here’s Stan enjoying some blueberry yogurt. I have had Photoshop for many years and only use a tiny fraction of its features. Mostly I adjust lighting, sharpen, and sometimes perform a little airbrushing. When I got my new laptop this year I didn’t have a copy of Photoshop to install, so I used my Princeton discount and purchased Photoshop Elements for MUCH less money. It does all the things I did in Photoshop, including fix up my scuba photos. I highly recommend it.

Fun with Photoshop

Posted by laurie on October 7, 2010

I can’t decide which one I like better.

I should add that there was next to no work on my part, they’re just a click away in Photoshop.

Mine

Posted by laurie on October 6, 2010

Awww. Looks like some beagles are bummed out because daddy took the dead rabbit out of the crate. It was an exciting evening. Sherman was sitting in his crate and wouldn’t come out when Phillip motioned him to. The whole thing looked a little suspicious so Phillip took a closer look and discovered the bunny. It had been dead for several hours… I took the boys upstairs while Phillip removed and disposed of it. We should have let Sherman see that, because he spent the next hour in the house and yard looking for it. And when Stanley tried to interrupt him in his pursuit, Sherman snapped and growled. For a mild-mannered beagle, he is one intense hunter. He has by far surpassed the efforts of Clayton, Spenser and Scooter. Superior genetics, I guess.

B is for bank statements

Posted by laurie on October 5, 2010

This post goes under the tag “no beagle content” but it does show what can be done when you set your mind to it. For years, literally YEARS, we have let paperwork pile up in the kitchen. There was nowhere to put it it and as the pile grew higher our motivation to file dimmed in reverse proportion. Then Phillip decided to build a file cabinet to replace the wicker shelf. Because of its width, he had to cut the laundry room door in half and make it a bifold door. (I painted it, my major contribution to the entire effort.) So now we had a gorgeous filing cabinet which stored a huge stack of paper. Then on Saturday while I went into NYC to a baby shower, Phillip commenced “Project File It.” I came home to these glorious stacks of paper all over the kitchen. We decided that, unlike in the past, we would not file in chronological order, which made it a lot easier. We finished sorting and filing that night and breathed a huge sigh of relief. If we can do it, you can do it.
