The objects of his affection

Posted by laurie on December 16, 2010

I am a pretty decent baker, although I shy away from anything that has layers. Where I shine is my holiday biscotti, which has achieved a bit of a cult status among those who enjoy it. Green and red, it contains pistachios and dried cranberries and tastes delicious. This is one batch: I’ve made five batches so far and will probably make another two when we get back from Jamaica.

Update: here’s the recipe! When you finish with the dough you’ll wonder how it’s going to hold together. Knead several small balls then join them into two equal pieces, roll them out and flatten.

And this was the fourth pumpkin pie I’ve made in less than a month. Also the fourth pumpkin pie I’ve made in my life! I can’t believe how easy it is to make a pumpkin pie!

Their application to MENSA

Posted by laurie on December 15, 2010

Could someone please explain how they did this? And without overturning the coffee table? We are completely stumped.

“Uh oh. I see sunscreen.”

We are Jamaica bound! Leaving on Friday for a week! Maggie’s house is going to be too busy but our dogsitter Janine has volunteered to stay with the boys. Thanks, Janine! I haven’t decided if I’m going to bring my computer or take a DD vacation as well. I’ll let you know.

A night out

Posted by laurie on December 13, 2010

Last night we went to our friends Cathy and Judy’s for dinner and a little tree trimming. I forgot my camera so I’m going to have to recount this in words only. Their dog is Keesha (the Keeshond) and their friend Celia came over with Keesha’s sister Tallie. Both girls are highly energetic. We had to take two cars so I took Sherman. He tolerated their attentions and it helps that he can’t hear because they were quite noisy. I’m sure that would have raised his stress level. Then Phillip arrived with Stanley and for a little while I think his barking drowned out the girls’! Eventually everyone settled down. Sherman headed to the couch for a nap and Stanley cruised the vegetable and dip tray. He likes both red and green peppers!

Going shopping

The winner of the caption contest is Paws for Thought for: “I sure hope you kept the receipt, Dad.”

And the runner up is Jenny: for BYOBeagle

I always feel guilty at the supermarket when I see people with the reusable grocery bags stuffed into their cart, like they’re ready to save the world. So let me get this off my chest: I use both paper AND plastic (paper inside the plastic). But hey, I do this so I can use them as trash bags later on. No wastebasket or wastebasket liner necessary! Does that count as

Impulse purchase

Posted by laurie on December 9, 2010

You know that aisle in the grocery store where they put seasonal items like Christmas lights and coolers? Well there I was the other day and when I saw this marvelous throw I imagined myself wrapped up in it on the couch on the weekend, reading a book and snuggling with the beagles.

So much for that good idea.

Your Wednesday guest

Posted by laurie on December 8, 2010

Meet Lily! Lily is a one-year old maltipoo, which means she’s half Maltese and half toy poodle. She’s only seven pounds but packs a lot of punch, let me tell you. She’s a smart little girl and even does agility!

Stanley was as obnoxious with Lily as he was with Moses. Sherman, on the other hand, was a perfect gentleman.

Well, most of the time. But Kate chaperoned so there was no funny business.

Stanley meets Moses

Posted by laurie on December 7, 2010

Clearly I should stick to photography (not videography) but here is just a little taste of Stanley meeting Moses on Thanksgiving.

Your Monday guests

Posted by laurie on December 6, 2010

I’ve been nagging Ron to send me a photo of Bailey and Gypsy. Another pair of cuties! I love the ticking.

See that long piece of paper? This is the receipt I got from the ATM at the bank (Wachovia) when I gave it a stack of 30 checks to deposit. It scans them, adds them up and prints this receipt with a teeny image of each check. I had almost 60 of your checks and I was only at the ATM for about 10 minutes. Very cool indeed. Even cooler is the amount of money we raised for rescue: over $2700!

Beagles in motion

Posted by laurie on December 3, 2010

My friend Kate who came by last weekend with her teeny tiny cutie-pie doggy Lily is looking at this and wondering, “Hey! What about us?” Fear not, Kate, next week!

Yesterday I picked up 30 more calendars and got to meet Ron! He works near the medical office complex where I had an appointment so he came over. All outstanding calendars will be shipped today (but it’s not too late to order!)

Phillip brought home a new videocam-computer connector cord, so I hope to have a video for you on Monday. Have a good weekend!
