I’m back

Posted by laurie on October 3, 2011

Wow, two whole weeks off! I accumulated a bunch of photos but I have to admit that I’m feeling a bit rusty in the writing department, so I’ll keep this short. The blood work on both boys was all good and they’re not showing any symptoms of Lyme. Hopefully we dodged two bullets. And let it be a lesson – put Frontline on the dogs even if you aren’t seeing any ticks. Deer ticks (which carry Lyme) are teeny tiny.

Awww…there they are! Both of them are looking good, Laurie.

Oh..and tell me how many of you went “Awww…Clayton!”, when you turned to October’s calendar page. ::raises hand:: I did.

While preventatives are discussed. Don’t forget the preventative heartworm treatment! The drug that treats dogs IF they get heartworm is in VERY short supply. Many vets can not get it. So, they “treat” the dog with other drugs which keep the heartworms from growing (that is my understanding), but do not kill the heartworms. That waits until the drug is available again.

Excellent point! Sherry had to go through heartworm treatment twice – once while with the rescue group & 6 months later on our dime (our choice as we wanted to use our own vet). Our vet thought that the rescue group’s vet used what she called “the puppy treatment” – probably one of those other treatments that don’t kill the heartworms. Heartworm treatment is EXPENSIVE & can be very hard on the dog – my understanding is that the drug contains arsenic.

Yes, hard on the dog. I think that’s why a dog is tested before being given the preventive.

Is it October already? You guys are way ahead of me. How many people saw Toby the flying beagle Saturday night on the Bad Dogs show on the Animal Planet? It was amazing.

I saw him, Donna, Seven-foot jump to the top of the counter to get food – OMG! If he were mine, I’d be sure to change the room so he could never do it again. I’d be afraid he would fall and get hurt!

I’m so glad the blood work is good. We’ll be keeping fingers and paws crossed here that all continues to go well with Shermie and Stan!
