Next time you’re at the pet supply store…

Posted by laurie on October 26, 2011

Scared you, huh? Don’t worry, it’s not a real skunk, it’s one of the indestructible stuffing-less doggie toys. We’ve not had any skunk encounters with these guys, yet. There was the time that Spenser got sprayed while we were on vacation, so my cousin and Courtney had to deal with that. And then of course the time when Spenser and Scooter charged a skunk (Spenser actually picked it up in his mouth!) and they both got sprayed. I have had a bottle of Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover under the kitchen sink ever since, and I recommend that you do the same if a skunk encounter is a possibility – it worked really well for the smelly boys.

Sometimes their toys get as smelly as the real thing!

Our toys don’t seem to get too stinky, just covered in dirt and dog spit 🙂

Ah yes, The Great Skunk Spray Incident of February Two Thousand Aught Six. That was worthy of three days worth of DD photos. :-> First Spencer: http://beagles-on-the-web.com/dailyDigital/archive/feb06/feb07.html Then Scooter: http://beagles-on-the-web.com/dailyDigital/archive/feb06/feb08.html and you can’t leave out Clayton: http://beagles-on-the-web.com/dailyDigital/archive/feb06/feb09.html

The last one is definitely the punch line to the joke. :->

No skunks, just squirrels, ‘possums, rats, and lately, bunnies. The rats are the only thing Spunky has ever caught – which totally freaks me out that we even have rats in our neighborhood. As Karen said, the toys do get pretty smelly…..so they go in the wash, and whichever ones make it out in one piece are the ones she (Spunky, not Karen) gets to keep.

Love how Stanley always looks ready for action, and Sherman just looks so content.

Can anyone recommend a toy for a super chewer? Eddy loves the stuffingless toys, but they are all dismembered. I’ve given him Tuffy toys, the last one lasted 4 hours…and like a fool, yesterday I bought a Kong Wubba Ballistic, its amazing how much stuffing a small beagle can get out of one of those! He destroys Nylabones. Thankfully, he only chews his toys. He is chewing through my bank account!

As I’ve mentioned before, Cody is a super chewer (and I mean SUPER CHEWER!) Neither he nor Henry care much for toys. I bought them a stuffingless raccoon a few months ago and it isn’t very popular with them at all. What they DO like are rawhide chewies and pig ears. However, I don’t like to give these things to them very often because I’ve read about their caloric content. I also bought two big Kong Wobblers and fill them with Charlie Bear pieces, which have lower caloric content. I got Cody a Nylabone a few weeks ago and it lasted about 20 minutes before he consumed it entirely. But . . . if Cody doesn’t have a chewie to keep him busy, he starts mauling the dog beds. We have dog bed innards all over the dining room floor.

I hear you, Carol, about chewing through the bank account!

Scooby isn’t a chewer, but his cousin Muddy was. (Muddy passed over the rainbow bridge 2 weeks ago.) Anyways I bought him a Hurley ball, made by West Paw. They make balls, frisbees, bones and other toys. It was the one thing Muddy couldn’t chew apart! Indestructible and they float too!

My two only really like toys that have food in them, like those treat balls. Or bags of groceries.

My Baxter only likes toys with food too. On another note, does anyone have both a beagle and a cat? How do you prevent the beagle from eating the cat food???

Also, Stanley looks nice and svelte in that picture…

    • Luana, Cody, and Henry said

We have 7 cats and 2 beagles. The only way we can keep the boys from eating cat food is to keep the cat bowls on the kitchen counters and kitchen table. Sorry if this makes some people go “Ugh – Yucky!” We wipe the table and counters down a couple times a day with sanitary wipes and let the rest go!

We have 3 cats, and 2 Beagles. The cats eat in the basement on the stairs, seperated by a cat door, from the dogs. The dogs eat up on the kitchen floor. It works out really well, if you have a basement.

I hear you, Karen S. We have no cats, however, we stopped at my sister’s house with our two hounds on the way home from our vacation for a quick visit a few weeks ago. She’s got two cats and a very, very large Cocker Spaniel (okay … he’s fat. Husband Rob said, “Where’s the dog, or is he hiding behind that fuzzy manatee?”). The cats were secured in a bedroom, but it took Jordan about three seconds to locate and break the code on the dog proof cat box stashed in the hall closet.

      • Susan in DE said

Oh … and for good measure, then Jordan humped the manatee. Josie, surprisingly enough, was the more pleasant of the two house guests.

I finally found a chew toy that lasts months. I found it at Petco. It is a little white nylon dinosaur. I bought two, one for each beagle, and they love it. It is small enough so they can carry it around in their mouth and it is good for their teeth. I just replaced the old ones, they lasted 3-4 months. I think nylabone makes them but not sure. I looked at the petco website but didn’t see them. I can check next time I’m at Petco, which isn’t too frequent. Hope this helps.

In case anyone is in the market for the stuffless stuffies. Petsmart has them for 1/2 price right now. Just FYI.

I just looked at the links for the Great Skunk Spray Incident. My Spencer has the exact same suspicious look that your Spencer had in that picture. He gives me that look whenever he’s really not sure of what is coming up next. He’s all white on the front too. Except my Spencer is a lot smaller, 28 pounds and short legs. Of course I can’t capture that look because he is a slinky and hard to take a picture of.
