Poopsicles

Posted by laurie on January 16, 2012

I bundled up yesterday at the warmest time of the day (23 degrees) and took the camera outside. The boys made a beeline to the corner of the deck and started to play with frozen poop, running around and trying to take it from each other. I tried pushing them away to no avail and so I went inside to get a collection bag.

By the time I’d returned outside they’d moved their party to a different venue, one in which the frozen poop was hidden from me but obviously not from them. They were chowing down.

The only good thing I can say about this is that frozen poop does not leave that trademark smell on their breath. A small consolation.

When I take Cody on walks in the warmer weather, and when they go to the dog park, there are many opportunities for the boys to eat “critter poop.” Why it appeals to them, I think, is beyond the understanding of humans. My boys also LOVE to eat “kitty box crunchies” from our kitty litter boxes. I can always tell when they’ve been in the litter boxes because of that particularly pungent smell on their breath. I keep the boxes scooped out as well as I can, but they always manage to find bits of “dessert” before I can catch them.

For you DD readers who are not grossed out by this time and are still reading . . . When one of our cats upchucks dinner, a hairball, etc., Henry is right there to do cleanup duty unless I can get there first with paper towels.

Oh, the joys of living with beagles!

We try to clean up the dog poop as soon as it happens. A couple of our beagles are “cleaner-uppers”. However, rabbit poop is considered a delicacy in this yard and all of the beagles (including the honorary one) partake.

Fortunately our two are interested in other critters’ poop, but not their own (that must be a nightmare for anyone who has to deal with that.). When I saw the “Poopsicle” title I was thinking of Saturday’s yard cleaning duty activity, and how much easier it is to pick up after them when it’s frozen. One of our neighbors has his two dogs (not beagles) trained to use only a far corner of the yard for poop deposits … so much easier than having to walk the entire yard in a grid pattern.

    Oh yes. Bon Appetit!

I have always found this one of their more embarrassing qualities (embarrassing for me that my dogs eat poop!). Then I was talking to our Vet who told me hers do it too (and she doesn’t have beagles). Ok, that made me feel better but it’s still a daily challenge- get to the poop before the cleanup crew does.

I was doing the “grid” Saturday and Trent was following me every step of the way. No doubt looking for leftovers…B&G tend to like their Poopsicles when they are packed in snow..I guess it presents itself as a more refined taste…

So gross. We love out Beagles, but YUCK!
A little Kramer update – he’s on Piroxicam and that is seeming to help. His breathing is a little better, and he is not so frustrated. We’re just hoping to make him as comfortable as possible for the last few months. Cancer really just sucks. His spirits are good, and he seems in a better mood than me, his momma. πŸ™‚ Thank you all for the kind thoughts and tender words. And, thanks for letting me share.

Wishing Kramer comfortable, love-filled last days.

Thank you for making your priority number one keeping Kramer comfortable. He and you will be able to appreciate and remember his last days as very valuable – and while it may be difficult to believe – some of Kramers and yours most memorable days together.

My thoughts are with you too and I’m happy that you’ll get some high quality of life time with him before you have to make the hard decision. This time is just so precious because you know it’s ending. Having been taken by surprise with Boscoe and having only a few hours…most of that filled with hospital…to say goodbye, I wish now I had known so we could have indulged in all those things he loved so.

Indulge him and yourself in those now. You’ll have the most wonderful memories of him and his time will be fulfilled with joyous memories of you.

Like Carol said…we *are* here for you and we *do* understand.

I guess turds are like turnips; they get tastier with a cold snap!

We’re lucky – the ivy patch in the way-back of our yard must have a sign visible only to dogs that says “potty here” – because both dogs immediately started using that area of the yard. On the other hand – critter poop that’s out in the open is always up for grabs.

Spunky loves poop – period. I used to be concerned about it, but finally just accepted the fact. We try to keep the yard clean so she doesn’t snack too much, but it’s more difficult in winter when we’re going to work and coming home in the dark. We have a rabbit that has recently decided to hang out in our yard, and I think she’s letting it stay because she likes the “cocoa puffs” the bunny leaves behind. I’ve never heard of a beagle who won’t chase a rabbit…….Spunky never ceases to surprise us.

Since we are on the topic of gross poop eating I will share my dirty little secret about Terra the Beagle. She eats it right out of the bum of Petey Beagle. We have watched her out the window circling him as he circles to find the right spot and as soon as he lifts his tail she whips into positon…sometimes it does not even hit the ground….

    • Luana, Cody, and Henry said

Since Darlene shared this “dirty little secret,” I will share one of ours. As I mentioned above, Henry likes “kitty box crunchies.” He also likes to eat them “out of the bums” of the cats, if he can catch them in the act. Our cats are usually pretty tolerant of this, too, if you can believe it!

    • Sue~Barney & Jodi's Mom said

We call that ” right out of the oven.”. Jodi used to do that with Hoover, but doesn’t with Barney with Hoover gone. It is just gross, but like someone said, you just have to accept it….

      • Darlene Main said

Ha ha-we say a “loaf fresh out of the oven”! And Petey tolerates it too! I googled poop eating once and why dogs do it….it listed bored, lacking nutrients, etc, but the number one reason dogs eat poop? Because THEY CAN! I laughed out loud and don’t worry as much!! At least when she is eating Petey’s, I know she is getting high quality poop!

I figure the dog before ate more tasty dog food than mine. πŸ™‚

Wow, Shelby2 has a lot of distinguished company. She follows Dexter around the yard. She also “gives the once over” to whichever Beagle comes in from outside. She then barrels through the pet door to “find the prize”.

      • Gunner and Bailey's Mom Anne said

It’s good to see that I’m not alone. Bailey stalks Gunner and is right behind him as he poops too! I just can’t be fast enough to pick it up before they are both into it! I give them apples wedges to clean their teeth a bit after. I know, it’s probably a ‘reward’ in their mind but it’s way better than poo kisses. really gross. Poor Gunner, he now poops with his butt by the fence so she can’t get to it as fast. hee hee.

    • Cobalt & Onyx's mom said

Onyx does that sometimes too. She even goes so far as when Cobalt is eating, she sticks her nose under his tail, like she’s just waiting.

How can we get these beagles to stop? Mine eat it and then come inside and throw it up. There is nothing worse than cleaning up poop puke! Any suggestions?

    • Harper said

I’ve heard pineapple in their food will make the poop less appetizing (sounds weird to say that πŸ™‚ ) and there are products on the market that do the same thing…. Shotzy the German shepard did that when she was younger but has stopped. Bartles the Basset did that when he first came to live with us, but I’m fairly sure he’s stopped also. I’m basing the stoppages on the amount of poop I clean up ever or every other day. It’s so difficult in the wintertime because I go to work in the dark and get home after dark 😦

    • Kramer and Gandolf's mom said

I thought I’ve heard it all, until I just read “Poop Puke”. That takes the cake. Gross, but I am laughing at the same time.

  13. Scott and Scout said

Why do I take Scout to the dog park? To eat poop? Sometimes i wonder…….

  14. Leslie said

Count our Benji in as well! Sometimes he brings in a “present” for us. Maybe a snack for later!!!
