Can you hear me now?

Posted by laurie on January 17, 2012

This is very puzzling, but Sherman isn’t always deaf. Lately I have noticed him react to Stanley’s barking, even in another room. But yet, you can walk up to him (while he’s awake but turned away) and scream his name to no avail. Phillip thinks he is selectively processing auditory input, I think it’s something in the air. Indeed, it’s a mystery.

Poopsicles

Posted by laurie on January 16, 2012

I bundled up yesterday at the warmest time of the day (23 degrees) and took the camera outside. The boys made a beeline to the corner of the deck and started to play with frozen poop, running around and trying to take it from each other. I tried pushing them away to no avail and so I went inside to get a collection bag.

By the time I’d returned outside they’d moved their party to a different venue, one in which the frozen poop was hidden from me but obviously not from them. They were chowing down.

The only good thing I can say about this is that frozen poop does not leave that trademark smell on their breath. A small consolation.

How’s the water?

Posted by laurie on January 13, 2012

Getting in the hot tub is Stanley’s signal to go outside and commence mindless barking. It’s really annoying and hard to stop him. When he’s done (or takes a quick break) he comes over to lick our faces and arms. It’s fun to tub at night and watch all the planes taking off from Newark Airport, which is about 30 miles away. Short enough to see all the lighting on the bottom of the planes but far enough so that they’re not too noisy. Unlike a certain beagle. Yes, Stanley, that’s you.

Let me outta here

Posted by laurie on January 12, 2012

Guess where? Yup, at the vet. Clayton used to do this, too, drag me to the door, and try to sit and wait for someone to set him free. This was just a routine checkup but somehow with the ear medicine and the urinalysis and a distemper shot, I didn’t get out for under $200. Vet care is so expensive! We have VPI pet insurance. It doesn’t cover routine stuff but we bought the cancer rider which was well worth it when Scooter and Spenser were both sick and needed chemo and radiation, respectively. Anyway, Stanley weighed 27 pounds which is 4 less than his high of 31. I think he could stand to lose another couple of pounds (as could I after a solid month of eating cookies).

The list grows

Posted by laurie on January 11, 2012

Both Angela and Spunky’s Mom posted yesterday that their beagles walk around with toys/chewies in their mouths whining. Add this to the list of “Things Beagles Do” and append Stanley’s name because he will pick up one of his toys, walk around with it and and whimper. Have to admit I was a bit concerned until I recognized the pattern. When we were new dog owners with just Clayton, we were astonished and in hysterics to watch him “bury” his toy in the living room carpet. Hello, Charles Darwin (and the voyage of the Beagle!)

Dr. Sherman and Mr. Hyde

Posted by laurie on January 10, 2012

Every so often I am reminded that the boys (not including Phillip) are animals. Like when they eat poop, or try to take down a bicyclist on the canal path. I bought some chewie bones that were in the dog food refrigerator in the grocery store (where I also found another $20 dog bed!). They were quite hard and impossible to break or cut in half, but I didn’t want the boys to eat them in one sitting. You can see where this is going, right? So Phillip goes to our sweet little Shermie who loves nothing more than a tummy rub and as soon as he reached for the bone, Sherman growled. Undaunted, Phillip tried again and was met with snapping and snarling. Can you believe it? Snapping and snarling? Finally he grabbed the angry beast’s collar with one hand and the bone with another and pried it loose. The wild coyote beagle was not pleased at all, and even less so when Phillip gave him a little talking to. My goodness! Who would have thought? Wouldn’t you peg Stanley for this kind of reaction? All it took for him was a few “Drop it”s and he did! Sherm and Phillip have since made up, but some sign language training with treats is in order. The bones, needless to say, went out with the trash.

No stepping on my head

Posted by laurie on January 9, 2012

The Big Bang DVDs arrived Friday and this weekend we watched the entire first season and started the second. Kind of embarrassing. The boys slept through every single episode, leading me to believe that they’re not fans of comedy.

The other meaga-thing I’m in the middle of is reading Stephen King’s “The Stand”. I am 40% (Kindle measurement) through the 1135 page novel and am not quite sure if I have the oomph to finish. Comments, anyone?

Tally ho!

Posted by laurie on January 6, 2012

Phillip takes the boys for a long walk on Saturday and Sunday and occasionally during the week, depending on time and available light. His favorite walk is a five miler along the canal, which first requires a short drive to the other side. After the harnesses go on they are READY to get in the car.

(I know, I know, but all they had was the pink!) Since there is a canal on one side of the path and a river on the other, Phillip sometimes lets Sherman go off-leash. He’ll run about 20 yards ahead, then come tearing back. Over and over, and this probably explains why he immediately takes a nap when he gets home. Unfortunately, Stanley can not be trusted so he stays on the flexi, but has a great time anyway.

By the way, I don’t have photos but am tickled to announce that Phillip was appointed Deputy Mayor of our township. It’s not as big a deal as it sounds, but still! My husband the Deputy Mayor!

High fashion

Posted by laurie on January 5, 2012

Uncle Bob and Aunt Nancy got the boys Snuggies for Hanukkah! Stanley’s is red plaid and neither of the boys particularly enjoyed wearing them, but let’s face it, a photo op is a photo op. Uncle Bob and Sherman were playing “High Five” here. Too cute.

Some new furniture

Posted by laurie on January 4, 2012

Look who got a new bed for Hanukkah! My grocery store had placed this attractive $20 bed at the end of the last aisle in the store, next to the fake logs, and I went for it. I propose we start a pool on how long it will last. No need to bet on the Superbowl, just stick with me.

Sherman likes it, too. He’s a lot like Clayton in wanting to sleep in every available bed. Maybe I should buy another.
