Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Posted by laurie on May 9, 2012

It’s kind of a shame that we don’t have a good view of the canal from our house. But the boys manage to eke one out through the bushes and trees. If they see someone from here walking south, they’ll tear around the house into the backyard to continue the barking. The other day Phillip was walking the boys on the canal and he called me just before he got to our house. I went down to say hello and the beagles were like, “WTF? There’s mom but there’s all this WATER in the way!”

Too cute…. The lab HATES water. So does the Basset. Shotzy(german shepard), on the other hand would’ve jumped in and swam over…. She LOVES water. JD (lab) and Bartles (Basset) avoid my husband when he’s watering…. Shotzy doesn’t care. šŸ™‚

Isn’t it unusual for a Lab to hate water? One time I walked down by the water in November, and there was a lab standing in the freezing water smiling happily.

Ignorant about dogs until we acquired Spunky, I just assumed all dogs liked water. She definitely does not. She’ll get her feet wet, but that’s it. While staying at a relative’s resort in the UP (cabins on a lake, not a fancy resort), my husband and I decided to go for a boat ride. We thought maybe Spunky would join us, but she refused to leave the end of the dock, so we left her on shore. As we floated by the next dock, she ran out to the end of it to see us. Then she followed out to the next dock. Then the next. I finally told my husband we had to go back or she was going to try to run around the whole lake and onto each dock to try to get to us. It was a pretty funny sight – wish I’d had a video.

    Happy Gotcha Day, Ruby!!

It’s so cute when they see Momma or Poppa from a distance and get all excited. Occasionally, one of us will be driving into the neighborhood while the other one is walking the hounds, and when you pull over and they realize it’s you in the car, they go berserk. Josie used to recognize Rob’s van from a distance, but now with both of us having recently acquired different vehicles, that doesn’t happen anymore.

    Happy Gotcha Day, Ruby!

If one of us goes into a shop for a few minutes JB and Cassie behave as though you’ve been gone for DAYS – lots of mad tail wagging, smiling and kisses! And if they’re (occasionally) left for a couple of hours Cassie literally squeaks with excitement when you return. Bless them, they give you such unconditional love and it takes so little to make them so happy ……….. !

Happy Gotcha Day Ruby from England!! x

Erich’s truck is about 20 years old, and even with a new muffler, you can hear it coming. The dogs know that truck well! The only thing is, we live next to Erich’s parents, and sometimes his Dad drives the truck. If they hear/see the truck pull in and Erich isn’t home, they assume he’s driving the truck. When he doesn’t show up after a couple of minutes, they get confused.

      Happy Gotcha Day Ruby!

I love it when dogs have that puzzled expression on their faces. After my shoulder was operated on, my mother came over to do my vacuuming. The beagles were SO perplexed! “WHY is SHE pushing Mom’s noisy machine around? Who does she think she is, anyway?”

Speaking of water, we introduced Mr. Peabody to our sailboat this past weekend. We humans had bar duty at our sailing club so the beags stayed on the boat in the cozy back cabin while we poured pitchers of beer for the returning racers. I think the dogs enjoyed their adventure, which included walks around the harbor meeting and greeting people. Our friend from Phil’s Java House even came out with a couple of strips of bacon for them – woohoo!

    Happy Gotcha Day Ruby!

The late great Driftwater Anne loved water in any form. She would sit in the middle of the yard in the worst kinds of thunderstorms. We nicknamed her “Raindog”. She got loose and took herself hunting in the swamps one 4th of July and when we found her hours later she was encrusted in muck up to her collar and exhausted, but clearly a happy Beagle!
