Open for discussion: August 21

You first met Lily in December 2010. She’s as perky and cute as she was then, maybe even more so. Kate – it was great having lunch with you yesterday!

I agree with everyone, what a happy, smiling little girl!

This morning when I got up, it was a glorious 65 degrees (Farenheit … about 18 degrees Celcius for our UK friends :->), so I had time before work and took Josie for a nice, long Sniff’n’Pee. I don’t even bother calling it a “walk” anymore. Yes, walking is how we get from one sniff’n’pee spot to the next one, but it certainly isn’t the primary objective of the activity.

How right you are about sniff’n’pee Susan! Sometimes we’re overtaken by people with really old dogs because all my two want to do is sniff! They’re especially sniffy just after it’s rained after a few dry days – think all the sniffs become much sniffier then! They also spend ages eating grass, the long flat type you don’t find in the garden. I often stand there as their attentive servant, waiting to move on (how do they know when you don’t have a lot of time and need to move on – those times they take simply ages!!)

Susan, I did a long one of those with Ruby yesterday. Took an hour to walk-rather sniff-‘n-pee- 1.6 miles. But it was gorgeous in Richmond and I go back to work (I teach) on the 27th, so I took advantage of the cooler weather.
Donna-where do you live that the kids go back to school on July 30??? Yuk! When do they get out for the year? April?
    Lily is so cute!

    • The state of Hawaii went to year round school a while back. Kids get out mid May and go back end of July. With many 2-3 breaks in between. I don’t know how the parents handle it. I mean, August is prime family vacation time.

When they first started this system each school had a different vacation date. So you could have a child in elementary, middle school and high school and they would have had all different vacation dates. Plus the fall, winter, spring breaks different too. It was insane. After about 3 years they figured it out and changed most of the dates, but I think they are all a little different still.

Seeing back to school ads in June is obnoxious. Although Costco already has some Halloween costumes for sale!!! Or maybe they are left over Mardi Gras outfits, we can only hope.

p.s. I love the picture of Lily.

I had to start using a code word for walk, and I (insanely) came up with “doodle”. So our walks are sniffy doodles, pooper doodles, etc. Many times they are smorga doodles when there’s a lot of crap to snack on.

I’m glad I am not the only one who has a hard time getting a beagle to walk along properly. Cody wants to do his own thing, and Henry just stays in the same place for 10 minutes at a time sniffing and howling! We’re better off driving 12 miles (one way) to the dog park and I can sit while they have fun!

Understood, Cathy. You can only utter the word “walk” in our house if you intend to take the whirling, howling maniac out immediately after you say it. Otherwise, if we need to discuss it amongst ourselves, we talk about strolling or perambulating the hound.

Lily is adorable! Thanks for the new words to call our walks. Eddy pulls from one smelly blade of grass to the next. On a hot day he’s been know to just plop down under a nice shady tree…and I go from being the pullee to the puller.
