Good morning everyone! I think Huggy Bear knows he’s at his forever home now.. He has started to tear things up during the day 😦 Just little things, but still…..

That’s so hard. Kramer tore our house apart when he first arrived. He turned into an awesome dog, but after lots of training and obedience classes. Good luck! I do know ho frustrating that can be, as our kitchen chairs still have all those bite/chew marks.

Sue, have you tried using a spray bottle filled with water? When he chews anything he shouldn’t, squirt him smartly on the top of his head with water and it should shock him enough to stop him it! We used it when JB was a puppy, particularly when he was play biting (his little teeth were like needles!) or chewing when he was teething. It doesn’t hurt them but it startles them enough to stop them from what they’re doing. We found it worked better than telling him to stop it, because he could ignore words but he couldn’t ignore the water! After a few weeks if he saw us pick the spray bottle up he stopped chewing anyway, so we stopped using it fairly soon. It might be worth a try, good luck!

That is a great idea, but he only misbehaves when we are gone. I’m sure he gets bored, hoping that he grows out of it soon and we don’t have to kennel him during the day.

Congrats on having a Huggy Bear. Have you tried Bitter Apple? You can buy it at pet stores and some times in Target or Walmart in the pet dept. It helped with our Louie when he was a puppy. If there is one item Huggy Bear likes to chew on, spray it with Bitter Apple and he will not chew on it again! It is sour stuff. I accidently got in on my lips once and then licked my lips. Yuck!

I have to laugh at this, Sue. Everyone told us to get Bitter Apple too when they were teething. My beagles licked the spray on the bottle! Perhaps the only dogs who were NOT turned off by the Bitter Apple.

  5. Bitter Apple and Citronella worked on one beagle pup but not the other. It’s definitely worth a shot, especially since it doesn’t cost too much. Spencer came as 1.5 years and he goes “postal” on us from time to time and tears into the cupboards and shelves and pulls things into the living room. The new carpet has been stained with unfiltered apple juice, green tea, whey powder, rice milk, etc. Anything low to the ground and in plastic is fair game. We thought that he would get used to it but he has separation anxiety or something like that.

We work out of the house half of the time so we finally had to put him back into his crate for 4-5 hours a day. He likes it. He is a den kind of dog. We put a bed next to the crate and Oscar usually sleeps on the bed right next to the crate when we are gone.

have you tried to limit his access to the house, only one room and dog proof it? How about your other dogs? Could they all be placed in one room together and not go nuts?

    Good luck.

Heh. We have child-proof latches on our cupboards. Even with them I had to put big heavy furniture in front of the doors when I left for work because Kichwa would manage to get her snooter in the pantry in spite of the latch and then climb the shelves to get to the brownie mix, which was then mixed with liberal amounts of beagle slobber and spread carefully yet randomly over the family room carpet.
