This is my 12 year old beagle Madison. During a visit to the vet last week for a dental cleaning the vet discovered a tumor on her soft palate. He got three samples of it. The pathology report says it’s melanoma or carcinoma and the prognosis is not good. This picture is of her enjoying the cool grass on an unseasonably warm day this past Spring. It’s one of my favorite pictures of her.

Oh, Denise, I’m so very, very sorry. That is just the worst. What more did they say to you about it?

Your Madison reminds me of Boscoe! Where did you adopt her from? They could, if we go by looks, be related. That is his picture. She is beautiful and I’ll just bet that she is that perfect version of beagleness. You can see it in her eyes.

      Boscoe is an absolute darling!!!

    • Denise said

Wow, Boscoe does look a lot like Madison! My husband got her for me as a gift. I hate to say it but he got her from a pet store here in NJ. He didn’t realize that pet stores sell puppy mill dogs. He now knows that if we ever have another dog it will not be from a pet store.

Madison is beautiful. Our prayers for comfort and peace for her and your family.

  5. Madison is so pretty. When I first saw her picture, I thought that Laurie was playing a joke on us. Madison looks so fluffy and soft and beautiful, I thought that it was a picture of a toy. I just want to cuddle with her. I will keep you and her in my prayers.

Madison looks a lot like Onyx too- that very sweet face you just want to snuggle with. I’m sorry for the prognosis- sending prayers to all of you.

And when I saw the photo of Madison, I immediately thought of Jordan. It’s that darling senior beagle look we all know and love. Denise, our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and Madison. Make the best of every moment you have with her (and we all need to do that every day, with all our pets and loved ones, whether sick or well!).

Oh Denise. I know just what you are going through and my heart aches for you. Our beagle mix, Louie, was diagnosed with oral cancer at age 8 and crossed the bridge at the age of 9. We removed his only to have a smaller one return and but it had spread to his lungs. The prayers of the Kneeland household are with you. Madison sure is a happy girl and such a cutie. Give her a hug from all of us. Keep us posted.

I have to say I was startled by Madison’s picture–she looks so much like my dear, departed Sophie Jean. It brought tears. Such a lovely, serene face. The Johnson pack is saying prayers and holding good thoughts. We are very sorry to hear the bad news–hold her close every minute you can

Madison is so beautiful. The way her fur is a mixture of colors just reminds me of a stuffed animal waiting to be played with. I hope her days are pain free so that she can enjoy every moment she has.

  15. Spunky's Mom said

Denise – so sorry to hear about Madison’s prognosis. She looks like a really adorable girl. Hugs to you and your family.

I’m missing my Spunky right now as she’s staying with my mother-in-law. I had a sort of emergency appendectomy on Tuesday night, and she was kind enough to come get Spunky so my husband and I wouldn’t have to worry about taking care of her and me at the same time. It’s so wonderful to have relatives who love our girl almost as much as we do and are willing to look after her for a few days.

Yikes! I hope you’re recovering well and that you’re able to get Spunky back real soon!

Denise, I’m so sorry to hear about Madison’s bad news. She looks like a beautiful and happy girl.

OM goodness, hope that you are feeling better. Lucky you to have your Mom close and wanting to help with Spunky.. Quick healing prayers for you and still for Denise, Madison and their family. My heart is heavy.

Heal well and feel better soon, Spunky’s Mom!!!
While I was home for initial recuperation from ACL, Shotzy was my constant companion. Initially I worried she’d be too rough and injure my healing knee, but she was gentle and a blessing…
I’m back at work now and my knee is STILL HURTING….
Amazing how the love of our pups can help healing…

    • Spunky's Mom said

Thank you guys for the well wishes. I am feeling better, just a bit sore. I do miss Spunky, but am glad I don’t have to move around too much right now to let her out and in. I think we’ll get her back Saturday or Sunday, then I can get some much needed beagle smooches.

I’m so sorry to hear about Madison’s diagnosis.Treasure each moment you have with your beautiful girl, and I will keep her and you in my prayers.

  17. What a beautiful white face. When Rosco’s face white and he got older people would come up to me and ask “How old is your puppy?” Beagles are forever puppies. Enjoy your puppy as long as you can.

    • Scott and Scout said

So true! My Scout is 12 yrs old with a faced turned white. And every once in a while someone thinks his a puppy. Always young at heart.

Madison is beautiful. At first glance I thought of my Halley, Jelly, Hubble and Cassie in their senior years. I love the seniors beagles! Madison has a very wise look in her eyes. Gosh, she looks so snuggly.

We will keep Madison and you and your family in our prayers. Give her a hug from us 🙂

  22. Scott and Scout said

Denise, try to hang in there. Madison is a beautiful pup. Her white face and faded colors give her a peaceful dignity. What an enduring photograph. Carol writes that Madison looks snuggly. I agree!

  23. Denise said

Wow, I didn’t get a chance to visit yesterday so what a nice surprise this morning when I saw my little girl featured. Thank you so much, Laurie!

Thank you all very much for your kind comments about Madison, they mean a lot to me. It’s been a tough 2012 for her. She was diagnosed with Cushings in January. We tried giving her Lysodren but unfortunately it made her very lethargic and she wouldn’t eat. I tried everything including chicken and rice and she just turned her head. We all know that it’s not a good sign when our beagles don’t want to eat! After 4-5 days on Prednisone she started eating again and after consulting with the vet I decided not to continue treating the Cushings.

I took her in for a 6 month check up in late July and the vet decided that since her senior panel was good he could clean her teeth and remove a few teeth. I dropped her off and he called me at work to say that when he went to intubate her he discovered the tumor on her soft palate.

I took her in to see him last night for a follow up and he said that either cancer is aggressive and metastatic so at this point his best guess is that she has 2-4 months left. We discussed treatment options further and he agrees with me that persuing treatment at her age probably isn’t the best thing for her. The tumor cannot be removed so it would just be some radiation and I don’t want to put her through something that at the end of the day doesn’t benefit her in the long run.

She was the best Valentine’s Day gift I have ever received. I have had her since she was 3 months old and she is a part of the family. Right now we are enjoying every day with her and giving her lots of love and lots of treat. The vet said that’s the best treatment he can think of for her. : )

I am a latecomer to the replys but I had to tell you what a sweet picture it is of Madison. That little white face is so dear. I am very sorry for the bad news. You and Madison and all of your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I’m so sorry for you Denise. I know how hard it is to have to go through this with your loved beagle. As you said, enjoy every moment of every day, and she knows she’s loved. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry late with reply but that is a wonderful picture of your sweet beagle and your news brings tears to my eyes – my ten year old needs his teeth cleaned (again!) and will hope for the best
    Enjoy your time with Madison

Madison is such a pretty old gal! I agree with what you are doing for her – lots of love and treats. Everyone asks me how old my “puppy” is – even with his gray face! My 10 year old puppy chewed my flip-flop, stole a hot dog off my granddaugher’s plate and dug a huge hole under the back fence this weekend. Do they ever grow up?
