Hooray!

Posted by laurie on February 7, 2013

Heading home today! Departure time is after Phillip’s last patient. I’ve had three total hours each of physical therapy and occupational therapy on Tuesday and Wednesday. This is a large and pretty well-known rehab hospital and they have all the bells and whistles. They have a little “apartment” with a kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom. Yesterday in OT I put dishes away from the dishwasher, practiced getting in and out of the tub, and folded and put away laundry. I got in and out of a car and played a hole of golf. I kid you not, they have a tiny little putting green! I sunk 3 balls and finished with a 5-over par. So proud!

I will probably post more often in the next few weeks, though my photography will be mostly couch-based.

Oh Laurie. I am SO glad for your good news. And, what an amazing rehab hospital that must be! Keep those spirits high, and best wishes!!

YAY! So happy to hear that you are going home today.
Perhaps the Rehab Doctors should consider adding a rehab exercise of putting kibble in dog dishes and putting them on the floor πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for keeping us updated…

    Wishing you continued healing!

That’s a whole new twist on “therapy dog”!! Laurie, echoing everyone else’s sentiments, we’re all overjoyed that you’re heading home today.

I would love my beagle-mutt to learn to fold my clothes, put dishes away, etc. Maybe we could start a franchise? Beagle-Maids ?

Quote from Gracie: “ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” She, and all the other groupies here are so happy. George even offered that he would be happy to snuggle with me if it would make you feel better. πŸ™‚

So glad to hear you’re going home and doing better! I’ve been following your story-every day, just haven’t posted recently-just busy busy busy at school! Ruby is doing well, although she has learned a new trick–tip over the trash can and cover the new living room carpet with all the mess, eat all things smelling like food………we thought a racoon had gotten in the dog door, since the first time it happened it was in the middle of the night, and we swore Rubes was upstairs asleep. THEN we caught her red-pawed when we came home from a college basketball game. I think she just learned it from the racoon…………….hanging with a bad crowd.

Cobalt used to get into the trash when we would leave. We bought a trash can with a lid that could be raised only by stepping on the pedal. Took care of that problem. Much cheaper than running to the vet because he ate plastic! (His favorites were the deli bags thrown in the trash that contained smells of cheese and meat).

      • I purchased a tall kitchen can from Home Dumptser …errr… Home Depot …. and it is made by Rubber Maid – it has a lip that has a lip and level you can push down on with your hand and it springs open. It only was $9.99 ! A bargin. So far it has kept ” the kids ” out of it, even when they tipped it over. The lid held tight. But they are still jumping up on my kitchen counter and eating the plastic head and bristles from my plate scrub brush. I have to remember to always stick it in the dishwasher after I scrub

But did this hospital have you practice putting dog bowls on the floor? Picking up doggie-do from the lawn? Giving beagle scritchies?

So happy to hear you are headed home. I know your recovery will progress nicely once you are home.

Thrilled you’re headed homewards! Felt sorry you had to do all the hospital’s laundry though, by the sound of things πŸ˜‰

Reading about the golf made me think of the joke (the old one’s are the best!)
“Doctor, will I be able to play the piano after my broken wrist is healed?”
    “Oh yes.”
    “That’s wonderful, as I couldn’t before…..”

YEAH you are amazing. That RH hospital is awesome. Soooooo happy for you, AROOOOOOO!!! Thank Dr. Phil for keeping us posted. Can’t wait for the book reviews from the couch and pictures of course. Hang in there girlfriend. Love, love love that you are going home. We are just thrilled.

  14. Kim Henry with Jack & Ferris said

Yay! I bet you can’t wait to get back home. Sounds like they put you to work for the rehab. We all can only imagine the joyous welcome the boys will give you! Hopefully, no jumping-like-maniacs!! Looking forward to the couch shots…

So glad to hear you are headed home. Let the real recovery begin in familiar surroundings and with your boys!!! Have been following you progress and looking forward to updates from you. Be sure to take it easy too and give yourself time to heal.

  16. Angela said

So glad the worst is over for you, Laurie! It will be wonderful to be back in the comfort of your own home, after a hospital and rehab setting for a week. The boys will be so excited to see you! Take care.

  17. Sue V. (Sunny's Mom) said

Glad to hear that you are going home today before the snowstorm arrives! Wishing you the best!

  18. Congrtatulations. Fast rehab.

I had to look it up. The average intestines in 21 feet for small and 7 feet for large. So you lost about 11% of you intestines. Pretty amazing.

  19. Cathy, Gomez, Lily & Mr. Peabz said

Congratulations Laurie! You must be so excited to be finally heading home to your normal life and your extra-normal doggies. Gomez is particularly impressed with your rehab progress, although I keep having to reassure him that you’re not wearing an E-collar.

Take care today and tomorrow not to overdo – you’ll be so tempted to do regular stuff in the regular way once you’re back at home. Enjoy those beagle kisses!

I hope you’re safely home with all 3 boys ahead of the stormy weather that’s supposed to hit the East Coast!

  27. Karen Spivey said

Does the apartment have a a fake exterior so Captain Siding can teach his art to you?

  28. Spunky's Mom said

So glad you’re home – but probably not as glad as the boys! Take it easy, don’t try to do too much too soon, and hunker down while “Nemo” blows by. It’s 9:30 here in the Detroit area – no snow yet!

Congrats again on the speedy recovery, and thanks once more to Phillip for keeping us all posted on your progress.

  29. Jeff, will and Bess said

Laurie, so glad to hear you are doinf better. Best wishes from Brooklyn!
