It’s D – day – Doggy delivery day – can’t wait to see the smiling faces of Sherman and Stanley this evening ! I plan to work from home tomorrow – just to make sure that all of the kids play nice together. There were no problems last time – and I guess I am just using them as an excuse to work from hom. The commute is so much better 😉

I have been working from home for the last several years. I miss the commute…NOT!!! I do get a daily leg licking from Tucker. Yesterday I received a impromptu duet from Niko and Yuki. There is nothing like a beagle duet. I rarely talk to people outside the company, but I have been on the phone to my boss when some singing has started up. My boss is a dog person so it just makes him want to be home with his dogs. The only problem is they have become so used to me being home all the time that whenever I do leave, they start pouting.

Enjoy the boys! I envy the “work from home” folks in the audience. My commute is easy, but I do miss the pups during the day and bringing them to work isn’t an option. I had a photo of my mini-Dachs Ginger on my desk and my pet-intolerant boss asked me if I owned a rat:(

Well, I was going to post a link to the comic on theoatmeal.com about The Pros and Cons of Working From Home, but it’s a smidge more R-Rated than the awesome “My Dog The Paradox” cartoon (which is about to become a book on May 7!). My poor Shotzy Girl hurt herself last night-front right leg-not sure yet what it is, no sign of wound/bruise….but she’s limping…. I’m just keeping an eye on her for now but a vet visit might be in the near future for us too 😦

Harper – I hope poor Shotzy is OK. It’s so hard to know what to do with them sometimes when they can’t tell you how they feel. I was home with Henry all day today to monitor his condition. He still hurts, but seems to be a little better. The hardest thing is getting him to take his meds. I wrap the pills in canned food, but the Tramadol is a bitter pill and he likes to eat all around it.

Exactly! I don’t want to rush her to the vet if time is the only way for her to heal, and I don’t want her to not get vet care if she needs it…. Big sigh. I REALLY wish she could just tell me- yes Mom I’m fine, or Mom I need to see the Doc….
Have you tried peanut butter? Quincy is on Tramadol and she takes it no prob with the PB.

I just gave Henry his Prednisone and Tramadol in canned food and he took both with no problem. Big relief – he’s getting better!

We had a lttle girl with a limpy leg a couple of weeks ago. She’s done it before and we think we know how. If she’s upstairs when she hears doggy dinner being prepared, she comes down the stairs at warp speed, does a handbrake turn at the bottom and runs into the kitchen without even slowing down! So it was a trip to the vet and a week’s course of doggy anti inflammatories, which cleared the problem up. We try to ensure they’re in the kitchen before we start getting their meals ready now, to hopefully make sure we avoid the staircase dash in the future!

Forgot to say, the anti inflammatories were dispensed in a teaspoon of ice cream – always works well, they just slide down without a problem.

Actually, in our house, we have a Mary Poppins-inpsired sure fire way for dispensing medication. The song goes a little like this … “Just a spoonful of salmon helps the medicine go down, the medicine go down, the medicine go down.” (Or cooked chicken, or smoked turkey ….).
Rob figured out that if you give Josie a tiny taste of the meaty medication vehicle and get her all revved up, you then split up some meat in both hands, put the medication in your first hand, and as you shove that toward her face, make sure she sees the other open hand is right behind it with more meat and no questions are asked. She’s busy gobbling up the handful with the medicine while she’s eyeing up the next handful, so she doesn’t even notice when she’s in snarfing mode.

Jodi and Huggy went to Doggie Day Camp yesterday, had a new floor put in the Master Bedroom. They did very well I am told. I thought for sure I would get a call to come pick up Jodigirl. She can be a pill sometimes. They said that she would only interact with the other Beagles. Guess she is a snob, huh? Huggy wanted to play with the little dogs (he weighs 50 lbs). Oh to have been a fly on the wall.
Have a good time of vacation. I know the boys will have a wonderful time at Camp.

I don’t get to work from home that often. My communte is approx 1 1/2 hours each way- on a good day. They are moving my office in to NYC some time this summer – so it will only add to the commute and to the expense i.e. higher bus fares and adding NYC tax to my paycheck. I hope that they let me work from home more often after the move. Buddy and Holly love to have me work at home – but I know what you mean ” Tuckers Dad” about a duet when you are trying to speak on a conf call. I have had a few occations where the whole conf call will start laughing when the start hearing Aroooooooo ! With the 4 of them tomorrow – I will have to be especially viligant to hit the mute key – Stanley loves to bark at all the passing dog walkers etc. They ALL love to try and jump up in my lap and on the the keyboard while I work. Would rather have dogs as co-workers….LOL Just wish I could work from home every day.

My commute ranges from 10 min one way to 2 hours one way…. Depends in the location of the project….

I totally agree, Audrey – working from home and having your dogs as co-workers would make my job a lot sweeter, too! Looking forward to hearing stories of how the 4 beagle babies interact while the Kramers are enjoying their vacation!

I work at a big, global company and I have colleagues in Paris, London, Singapore, Bangalore, Delhi, Dublin, Sydney, Raleigh, Atlanta, Boston and Austin who have heard my pack singing. Everyone has been universally impressed with the volume and enthusiasm of the hounds, as you can imagine. A bunch of us once shared video of our dogs on WebEx – that was hilarious.
I usually work from home in the mornings so I can avoid the traffic and hang out with the beags. Unfortunately this week I’m in a class so the dogs and I are cranky, but we’ll get back to our usual routine soon.

None of us her at work can work from home. Nor can we bring our dogs to work. We ALL have multiple dogs and or cats, our building doesn’t allow animals. Wish they did. But I would much prefer to have the pups as my co-workers as well.

I work from home three days a week and go into the office the other two days. It’s a nice balance, but I must say I prefer the home days. Actually, I’m on the cusp of retirement. I plan to go shopping soon for some velour tracksuits.

I don’t know, whenever I work from home, I am overcome by the irresistible urge to nap. It was worse when there was a dog sleeping nearby who needed to be cuddled… I did work from home during the inauguration though (I live in DC). My window view was nonstop traffic, 24 hours a day. I didn’t leave my apartment…

I would love to work from home but, as a teacher, I don’t think that’s an option! LOL Although I have thought about training Jack as a therapy dog then I could bring him to school with me and he could provide pet therapy to my students (I teach special needs students). We used to have a pet therapy dog come visit us but the owner didn’t have time any more.

Alll four of the kids have settled in nicely. Last time Holly was right in the mix- playing with the three boys. Last night and today- she is rather reserved and just watches. Buddy and Sherman are the ones who are playing the hardest. They raced around the yard this morning – playing keep away and tug of war with a couple of stuff animals. Stan joined in a bit but mostly watched. I think he is waiting for Sophie the chocolate lab to come out next door. I am loving this day – working from home and watching all of the playing

I love to see the dogs play – mine went a few rounds through our small backyard last night, with lots of face biting and galloping around. The two big boys really go nuts and Lily, with her shorter legs, brings up the rear and cuts them off from time to time. So cool to watch!

I can’t work from home either, but the Library participates in Take Your Dog to Work Day each year. Me and a co-worker started it here, and this will be the 3rd year! 🙂

Our office participates in “Bring Your Child to Work” day, but no dogs. The age range for the kids doesn’t make sense for what we do (corporate banking project management work), it’s hideously boring for them so they’re all usually either playing with the Nintendo DS or their parents have them watching movies on their iPads or drawing very unflattering pictures of you on their whiteboards. “Bring Your Dog to Work” day would be much more fun (And I bet Josie could eat as much as 3 young kids!).

Our office does “take your kids to work” day too – although they do some kind of separate activity so none of the kids actually interact with the people doing any of the actual work. Kind of makes sense for my field as well, I can’t imagine 12-year-olds getting too excited about legal work. But I think I would prefer dogs as well… It would be more interesting at any rate! The few times I snuck my dog into the office it was pretty hilarious…

Does anyone have a good shampoo for dogs to recommend. I’ve just been tested and am allergic to dogs! They told me to not have my 12year old beagles in bed or in the bedroom…. YA RIGHT! So, will need to bathe them more often. Gunner seems to have dandruff a lot so I’ve been using an oatmeal based shampoo that doesn’t make them smell fruity but was wondering if anyone used something else?

May I ask what kind of symptoms did you have and what type of tests did you have to go through?
Sometimes I think I might be allergic to my dogs. Not that I would do anything different either.

Thank you all, these are helpful! Eleanore, I’ve been having a lot of sinus issues over the years so went in for some tests. Cats were by far my worst allergy but dogs and dust came up too! Mine beags are 12 so I can’t imagine they play a big part part in this battle or I would really be miserable so I figure a bit more cleaning and washing will do the trick! It’s very dusty here in the midwest usa so that is a constant battle anyway.

It’s gentle and comes in different smells. I like ginger root/pink grapefruit because I’m not a perfumy person and I have allergie issues with scents.
We bath the dogs At Least once a week because it is so hot here and they like to roll in cat s**t at the park. So far so good,,

I like to use Allegroom when Eddy needs frequent baths. It is soap free, so he doesn’t get dry, itchy skin. Years ago my vet recommended it for Halley, who was allergic to grass

When I had allergy testing done 4 years ago, I too was allergic to dogs. I wash the blankets and beddings every other week, get allergy shots, and still have the beags. 🙂 I don’t notice the allergies (to dogs) at home much, but when I visit my sister, I swell up if her cocker’s lick me.

I am allergic to cats and dogs (and lots of other environmental things). We have two beags and one cat (we used to have two cats, one recently went to the bridge) in the house. They all sleep in the bed with us.
I take allergy medication daily and wash the bedding in hot water once a week. We also have special anti-allergen pillow case covers.
When I was last tested (4-5 years ago) the allergist suggested that I get rid of the pets. Ummmm. NO! We actually added another dog since then.
I wouldn’t give them up for anything. I can take medication.
Sorry I don’t have any shampoo recommendations. We use an otameal/baking soda shampoo on the dogs that is a Petsmart brand. The smell isn’t too strong. They don’t get many baths though – maybe once a month.

We get the shampoo from the vet – because both Buddy and Holly get allergies in the spring and their underside gets red. It is Virback Cortisoothe – i has hydrocortisone and says it is soothing and anti-inflammatory. It seems to do the trick. They are less red. The bottle is only 8 oz and it costs $15- do pretty expensve for such a small bottle. Buy hey – I admit it- I spoil my sweeties and do not care what is costs as long as it helps them.

Remember the old days when dog flea and tick shampoo had a strong, nasty odor? We didn’t have advantix, etc back then, and I guess the stinky stuff is better than having ticks.

I had terrible allergies when I was a kid. I had the whole series of allergy tests and my number 1 and 2 allergies were dust and dogs. My mom just laughed. She said I could sleep outside and the dust wasn’t going anywhere. (I am paraphrasing a bit). So I just took an allergy pill every day. When I got older they mostly went away.

Twinkie. She was a Maltese Poodle. Back before Designer Dogs they were called Mutts and we got them at the pound for $20.
