It always amazes me how the boys can go from 0 to 60 in about half a second. Phillip was on speaker phone last night with Uncle Bob when Bob’s dog barked in the background. Stanley was immediately awake and started to carry on as only Stanley can. Sherman seems to hear loud barking so he awoke and happily joined in. They searched the house and yard to find the intruder with no success, so they went back to sleep.

  1. Scout has an amazing sense of hearing. He can be sleeping (?) and hear my lowest whisper of his name. Bingo, he’s awake!

With Josie being hard of hearing now, I had forgotten how sharp their hearing can be until Lady joined us. There is no sneaking anything around that dog … doing something in the kitchen, heading toward the door, etc. She’s settling down and getting a bit more sensible about the barking, it’s no longer happening with every movement within a five mile radius of the house, so that’s good. She’s turning out to be a good alarm dog. :->

JD the Lab and Bartles the Basset will bark their fool heads off at any perceived noise, but Shotzy the GS is much more discriminating…. She’ll lift her head and listen intently and then decide if it’s appropriate to bark…

I merely think of going in the kitchen and all 3 dogs are there.

My Kramer was like that for a walk. All I had to do was Think it, and there he was. He knew.

Ah yes- the incessant barking when you are on the phone. (Well, or anytime). My parents used to ask ‘what are they barking at?’ they don’t any more.. they just wait for them to settle down so I can keep talking.

Barking starts for some silly reason but then it kicks off a chain reaction. They don’t stop to ask “Hey, just why am I barking?”

We were listening to a TV program and the person gets out of their car and slams the door. Boom! Dogs go from asleep to barking at the front door!! Sweetums, our oldest at 9 years, must have come from someone with a door bell because everytime she heard it on TV, she would bark and go to the door. That one has finally stopped after many years of fruitless barking!!

Some poor unsuspecting guy came to the door the other day with some religious message and you would have thought that it was Al Qaida at the door the way the dogs carried on. The guy didn’t stay to chat.

  7. Doorbells on TV should be against the law. Also people saying “hello”. Instant barking mad house. There is a solar commercial with a door bell that airs every morning on the news about 6:30am and I’m sure our neighbors appreciate it.

Laurie I finally got a few pictures of Mocha the 1/2 pit bull and 1/2 beagle. She’s really cute do you want them for the site?

Our two seem to know the difference between people who knock on the door that are welcome and those that aren’t (i.e. people cold calling, trying to sell something or religion). Even a parcel delivery man doesn’t usually warrant a barking because they seem to know that we want him to knock! How do they do it? Guess it might be down to the way we react to the knock – perhaps they can pick up our annoyance when it’s someone trying to sell burglar alarms, windows, etc!!!
