Don’t leave

Posted by laurie on June 19, 2013

I know you’ve seen this before. You take the trash out and are watched by these poor suffering eyes. And when you come back in you are greeted with tail wags and an occasional jump up. I wonder what they think.

Yes, it makes you feel good about yourself, doesn’t it? These little guys are SO happy to see me!

  2. Alvah suffers from separation anxiety. At first he was disappointed that he couldn’t go with one of us to run an errand and would bark and just wait by the door. Now he tries to block us by jumping and snapping. He’s managed to tear a couple of shirttails and one pair of yoga pants (small tears, but nonetheless…). When we make it out the door, he barks and he jumps on the couch, biting into the cushions out of frustration–no leather couch for us–but within a minute he calms down and just stares out the window. By the time he hears the car driving up he’s sitting by the front door with his tail wagging ready to say hello.

Its the “take me too! take me too!” dance. Every time I go through the front door it happens. So we figured out after many years of “the dance”, that I must go out through the garage. Seems like they translate that to mean I’ll be right back.

Bartles always wants to go out front…. Except in the mornings M-F. We have a routine…. Everyone gets two cookies and the usual “be good, no fighting, no parties, stay in your yard, above all stay in your yard, I love you and Daddy will be home soon”… They snarf down the cookies (Bartles and Shotzy are very gentle) and then go settle in for their morning naps. Coming hOme at night tho , it’s chaos… All four at the back door three jumping up and old lady Quincy being trampled in a rush to greet me… So ill mannered!

Poor Gypsy gets trampled by Trent running for the back door….

I love that you leave a room and when you come back, it’s a joyous reunion. When I leave for work I always tell them I love them, and then when I come home for lunch and leave to go back to work and I tell them I will see them at 5 and to be good. The other day, they were both asleep so I just left without saying anything after lunch. As I backed out of the driveway, Onyx was in the window watching me with those big brown eyes. I waved, and then yesterday remembered my routine. ๐Ÿ™‚

When I leave for more than a garbage run, I always tell them I love them and I’ll be back in a while. I also tell them “No widdling no pooping no barfing in the house, no trash explosions. No break-ins, no break-outs, no eating other people’s food. You stay here no matter what happens. We will always come back. Obey the first responders* and be good dogs.”

In my head, I hear them say, “Yeah Ma, sure. Roger that. Uh huh. Got it.”

*We live in earthquake country. You just never know.

They are thinking, “Mom, STOP! You’re throwing out our snacks!”

Spunky is usually sleeping on the couch when we leave to go somewhere, but every once in awhile as we’re pulling out of the driveway I’ll see her little face peering out the dining room window, watching us go. Makes my heart melt!

If I walk out the back door to take a garbage bag to the main can at the curb and leave my seven beagles in the house, they act as if I am leaving for good, then bay, jump up on me, and go totally wild when I walk back into the kitchen from the yard. They have no concept of my walking out of the house for only a few minutes.

Ours are delirious with joy when you return, even if you’ve only been away a short time! At the moment it’s 24 degrees here in Derbyshire (a rare event in the UK these days!) and I’ve got two pairs of eyes staring at me, because we haven’t gone out for afternoon walkies – it’s far too hot for beagles not used to heat. But although I’ve told them we’ll go this evening, when it’s cooler, they’re looking at me like they haven’t had a walk for months (they had an hour and a half before I went to work this morning and they have two walks every day, whatever the weather and temperature). Beagles are masters at making you feel guilty …..!!

Julie, I hate to admit, but it took me a moment when I read 24 degrees and warm…. I had to look it up on my weather ap on my phone to realize it was C … 24 Fahrenheit would be freezing!
What an ethnocentric American I am!!!! So sorry!

My Yorkie will pine for me when I leave. Hubby is no substitution. But when I am home, she sits in his lap all the time. You would think I was gone for ever the way she runs to me when I return. So funny!

I’ve recently started letting Cody stay out of his crate during the day while we’re at work. The crate door is open, but I don’t lock him in. So far he’s been pretty good – I hope he stays that way!

When I back out of the driveway I see one (or two) faces looking at me from the front window. It’s SO hard to leave them . . .
