Dig it

Posted by laurie on April 4, 2014

Quite a hole, wouldn’t you say? I believe it’s the biggest hole that any of the beagles has ever dug.

I guess I’m lucky because no doubt it pales in comparison to some of the holes that your beagles have dug, am I right?

My daughter’s beagle dug a hole where all you saw of her was her rear legs and tail sticking out.

None of our beagles now are diggers but we did have one with perhaps some beagle in her(mixed parentage!) who made so many holes that your life and ankles were in peril walking through the yard. She liked nothing better than to come in the house with dirt on her nose!

We have raised garden beds and Honey Bernice finds it so amusing to kick the dirt out of the bed while she digs her holes.

    It’s not just beagles πŸ™‚
Bartles Basset loves to hide his toys (bury them for safekeeping)
Wookey Shepard loves to dig them up as well as random holes all over (puppies πŸ˜‰ )
Shotzy I think has grown out of digging …,

Fortunately, ours haven’t been serious diggers. In high school, our neighbors had Humphry the basset hound who was a champion hole digger. Even more amusing, he’d frantically dig, stick his entire head in the hole with his giant ears flopped on either side on the ground, and then bay at the top of his lungs (Which was muffled, since his face was in the hole!). We joked that it was either voles, or they lived on top of an ancient burial ground and there were ghosts.

  6. Buddy Houdini digs his holes to escape under the fence – but also digs the occatioal hole to burry a toy or Kevin’s stolen wallet with all his cash inside. We found it 6 months later – totally chewed up- with a good number of $20 bills in tiny pieces.

Jodi digs under the fence to escape, only during a full moon. LOL Huggy (basset/lab mix) has dug so many holes, not big holes, just enough to hurt yourself.

Gypsy is our only digger. Its been years since she even bothered, but in her prime, she could go a foot deep before we could catch her….her joy right now is eating grubs that are surfacing from the winter thaw…

My aunt has a jack russel who has turned nice yards into something resembling the surface of the moon.

My Marley Beagle is 12 years old and never was a digger – oh maybe a little scratch scratch to find a peanut that a squirrel had buried or to escape under the fence – but suddenly in the past month, he is digging some pretty big holes all over the yard. He comes in with muddy paws, legs, mouth and nose. I don’t know what he’s trying to find!

Maggie digs in my flower pots! She likes to bury bones- them bring them in all muddy and put them under Roy’s pillow! ICK!!!

Onyx is a digger. She used to follow Erich as he planted his garden and dig up everything he planted. He has since learned that she can’t be in the yard while he’s planting, and then we keep a close eye on her. Her digging is not limited to outside… she digs the carpet when she makes her bed, she digs on the couches… she hasn’t caused any damage inside but it’s funny to watch her because she digs furiously for a minute or two, then lies down and looks at you as if to say “What? I didn’t do anything!”

Our girl Kichwa did a little digging, but most of it was in the corners of the room to “bury” her rawhide bone for later consumption.

My DD Archive brain just KNEW there had been a Guest DD a while ago that featured a very good digger, and I found it! Check out Champion Digger, Ruby Lee!

I thought my guys had gone through the yard one day. πŸ™‚ No doubt, my Kramer had found worms or grubs. He used to eat dirt, too. I wonder if it helped him. He had cancer, and maybe it tasted good to him? We were once told maybe he wasn’t getting enough nutrients, but our food was okay for him – Purina One.

We finally had to transplant a tree because Jack kept digging up around it and exposing the roots. The last time all you could see was his back end and it was quite wide too. My friend was over and couldn’t believe how calm we were! LOL We even tried filling the hole and replacing the sod (even put a little fence around it) after transplanting the tree, he would jump the fence just to dig. Must have been something that smelled good in that spot. We’ll be building a patio over it this year, hopefully he doesn’t find a new place to dig!

Daisy Mae is a terrier mix and she digs trenches. She could dig a new foundation for a house if she wanted to.
