Better you than me

Sherman came along for the ride when we took Stanley to the vet on Saturday.

may12a

He was licking his butt and Phillip was unable to express Stan’s anal glands. The vet was able to do so, though not without some struggle and a little blood. Stanley is on a course of antibiotics and a non-steroidal. He has nearly stopped licking and he’ll be fine.

  1. I am impressed that Phillip would even attempt to try and do that. Buddy and Holly needs theirs done about every 2 months and I have no desire to do it, even though it would save me big bucks. The Vet visit is $65 each, but the Butt squeeze and nail clipping is ” complementary”. Even with giving them shredded wheat and pumpkin, it does not seem help. Maybe we need to come and visit Sherman and Stanley more often and ask Phillip for a squeeze….. ( just kidding )
    Hope Stanley feels better soon.

Look at Sherman, sitting on his buttocks like “um, no thanks, I’ll just sit here and wait”…… My first beagle has to go to the vet every month there the last two years. No amount of fiber would help us. Luckily, George and Gracie have not had that many issues yet. They do eat a much better diet that Doc did however.

I had a co-worker once tell us, “I know what hell smells like. Right before my vet expressed the dog’s anal glands, he said, “This is going to smell like hell.” I’m going to be a much better person for the rest of my life, because now that I know what it smells like, I don’t want to go there!”

Oh, poor Stan ….. fortunately, we’ve never had a dog that really had issues with that. On the other hand, I think Josie’s recurring UTI’s and the expense of having a urine culture done at least once a quarter probably paid for the addition to our vet’s office.

When Huggy had his “tail issue” last week, the Vet had his expressed too. I don’t have his done, but the Beagles every month 😦 Clarification. IF the Vet Tech has problems, THEN the Vet gets involved with the procedure. That is some nasty business…LOL

Yeah, years ago I asked my vet to show me how to do it, and he told me that I REALLY don’t want to get involved in anal gland bidness. I took him at his word.

Miss Lily has some kind of plumbing issue that I noticed yesterday so I’m waiting for the vet to open to bring her in. I sure hope it’s not serious – she acts normal (i.e. psychotic) but she definitely has a discharge.

  7. Right now we are at the VCA hospital waiting to see a specialist about Spencer’s butt. The recital pull through surgery in October was a success. But I started to see a little blood in his stool about a month ago. We treated it like hopefully it was a scratch from something he ate and was putting antibiotic cream up his butt. No luck. Still a little blood.

Doctor says he needs another pull through surgery. Major frowny face. :-(.

  8. When my Scout was at the vet last month, the vet took him into the back to express his glands. You should have heard his high pitched squeal. OUCH!
