Bode collage

Kaye writes:

“I had mentioned in the comments section of a post last week (week before?) that Bode was fighting prostate cancer. He unexpectedly left us on Friday morning
We’re grateful that he went with what I believe was some discomfort but no significant pain. I’m not sure the same can be said for us – it’s unbelievable how difficult it is to lose these guys. We’re making the adjustment to quiet dinners, an uncrowded bed, and a couch that doesn’t require covering the beagle with his blanket when you sit down (the couch also isn’t covered in hair, even though you just cleaned it off this morning). Even though these sound like annoyances, of course I would take them all back in a heartbeat if I could.”

Rest in peace, Bode.

He is so absolutely adorable. Hold onto the wonderful memories and may they give you some small comfort in these days during your healing.

Kaye – Yes, it IS unbelievably hard to lose a four-legged baby. Bode has taken a piece of your heart with him across the Rainbow Bridge. At least he was able to go from the love and comfort of his own home, rather than in a vet’s office. Hugs and much sympathy from Cody and Henry.

Aww so sorry to hear about Bode. May it bring comfort knowing that he is now running free from pain at the bridge with all the other DD beagles that have passed before. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

😦 Condolences. I was numb for a couple weeks after we lost our Brownie. After 2.5 years, I can finally talk about her and laugh when I remember some of her sillier antics. Love that photo of Bode with the lobsters!

Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. Even though it’s still raw and I’m unexpectedly teary at certain moments, there are plenty of things to smile about (like the pictures above). Last night I mentioned to my husband that we need to think about Bode’s ashes. If you’re supposed to scatter them in a place that was significant to the deceased, I think we’re going to have to go with the kitchen.

      Oh Kaye huge hugs!
You made me laugh while tearing up!
      Kitchen indeed!

The ashes in pretty oak boxes of our Whisky Girl, Rebar the heeler, and our old lady rescue Quincy are on a special shelf in the dogs room with their collars on top…. Now I’m thinking we might have to relocate them to the kitchen!

      • Rosco’s ashes are in a Koa Box and I never realized it but it has a direct view of the dining table. I might have to angle it a little so it has more of a view of the kitchen!

        Memories….keep them alive.

Yep, the kitchen or dining room would be perfect. Jordan’s ashes were in a very pretty box provided by the pet crematory, but I really didn’t want to keep them in a box in the house. It took a while to find the right spot … I ended up redoing a garden bed next to the house, and that was the perfect place. We waited until the one year anniversary of his passing, and we celebrated with a dinner of Boston Market meat loaf, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, and a Turkey Carver sandwich (all were the last few things he was happy eating, he didn’t want much food as his renal failure progressed) and a bottle of champagne (Josie shared the food, she doesn’t like booze … if we’d had Lady then, she would have had some bubbly!), then we interred his ashes. The box now contains Jordan keepsakes. It was a nice celebration … hard to believe it will be two years since he passed on June 29.

I knew I recognized the photo of Bode with the lobsters from a past Guest DD, and I tracked it down (Yes, Laurie, my DD Archive memory is at work again!). It features a nice write up of Bode from 2008. Thanks for sharing him with us, Kaye! (and is the “boyfriend” mentioned back then your husband now? Or shouldn’t we ask ….)

  22. Kate (Gandolf's mom) said

Oh I’m so sorry. Poor sweet Bode. He may have left Earth to join others over that rainbow bridge, but he’ll never leave your heart. So sorry for your loss.

  23. I am so sorry to hear of Bode’s passing. As you wrote, the blessing was that he didn’t suffer, and he had many wonderful years with you. The picture of the “old” guy curled on the chair cushion is precious. Old beagles look so dignified! Try to keep that great sense of humor (the ashes in the kitchen), It comes in handy between the tears. I bet Bode is proud of his Mom.
