Sherman came along for the ride when we took Stanley to the vet on Saturday.
He was licking his butt and Phillip was unable to express Stan’s anal glands. The vet was able to do so, though not without some struggle and a little blood. Stanley is on a course of antibiotics and a non-steroidal. He has nearly stopped licking and he’ll be fine.

I took Sherman to the vet yesterday for his annual checkup. They have some fancy shmancy blood test that checks for Lyme and a bunch of other tick borne illnesses and gives the results in 10 minutes. Sherm has Lyme Disease! He’s asymptomatic so it came as a complete surprise. Treatment is thirty days of Amoxicillin. Because Lyme can impair kidney function, we have to collect some urine to bring in. Any hints on how to do that are welcome. I made an appointment for Stanley to get tested next Monday. Thirteen years here and no Lyme up until now. I guess that makes us lucky?

Have you ever seen a beagle lay down and relax in the waiting room at the vet’s office? Me neither! But that’s what Sherm did, after about fifteen minutes of sniffing around and saying hello to everyone. (And lifting his leg to pee! What a shock, Sherman has never marked!) We were there for his regular checkup and all was fine except he tested positive for anaplasmosis and ehrlichia, two tick-borne infections. It could just be that he had these in the past and now has antibodies, so they’re doing more expensive tests to determine if he needs to take antibiotics. He screeched when the vet trimmed his dew claw but other than that he was a perfect patient. Go, Sherm!

Stanley developed a cough last week which seemed to be getting better until Friday night when he woke us up several times. So Phillip called our vet friend who got us an appointment on Saturday morning. I was kind of nervous because the cough reminded me of Clayton and here we were, back at the vet. But he thinks it’s just a bronchitis and prescribed an antibiotic and a cough suppressant. Plus ear drops for an ear infection.
I think it was hound day at the vet. There were three other beagles and two basset hounds.
Sherman was apparently dumbfounded meeting Homer and Marge, the brother and sister bassets. I forgot the bulldog’s name but he was a stray and they had recently taken him in. Imagine having two 75-pound dogs and taking in a bulldog! And I thought I was a dog person!
