Pardon my Yiddish

Posted by laurie on October 28, 2011

Let me tell you, this is something you would NEVER see with the other boys. No, they would be fighting instead. So what’s going on here is that Stanley is trying to assert some dominance while Sherman actually is. We call this schmerkel sniffing, a riff on the Yiddish. What’s it called at your house?

My mother used to call it “When good fellas get together.” Cody does the dominance thing with Henry quite often at our house, but there is never any fighting (thank goodness!).

I’ve enjoyed all the DD pix this week, but still have a hard time distinguishing between Shermie and Stanley most of the time. Happy Halloween, everybody!

Millie loves to sniff Sammy “there” all the time and we say “Millie why must you sniff his dingle”.

sounds like what we say. That’s the word we use, and it’s usually ‘Onyx, leave your brother ALONE!’

    LOL @Jeri! Too funny!

Gigi occassionally does this to Charlie and he just looks surprised and flattens to the ground in the “frog dog” position so she can’t. I’m not sure why he is so offended at it, but he clearly is. No fighting about it though for sure.

What is really funny is that Charlie (and Boscoe before him) would try to do that to Buddha…the CAT. Also his butt. Buddha would just turn his head and stare and that always, always make them dogs look away first. “Don’t look the evil in the eye” sort of thing. Yet both of them like to sleep with Buddha.

    Go figure.

I call it, “Tucker, stop it!”

Stanleys tail has a longer white tip and he has more white on his face. Shermie has a dark tail with a small white tip.
All three if our dogs would take the opportunity to sniff “ahem” each others nether regions if the opportunity presented itself. No fights over that, though the lab still growls and snaps at the Shepard. I think the lab is becoming more accepting of the Shepard since Whisky’s passing.

We call it a Very tense moment. Kramer smells Gandolf there, and Gandolf is absolutely using every second of training, to “Be nice.” Gandolf rarely smells Kramer there, and if he does, it turns into play.

It’s pee-pee sniffing and butt sniffing at our house. Humping is EXTREMELY rare. Jordan tried it once on Josie shortly after he arrived in our household. They were running around the living room playing (not with each other, they still don’t know how to do that) and in all the excitement, Jordan tried mounting Josie. Everyone froze for a moment …. Josie looked at Jordan with a “how DARE you???” look on her face, and Jordan was like, “Ummmm … hi there. :->” Then Josie let out this huge bellow like an enraged bull and he took off running and squealing, “Yipe, yipe, yipe, yipe, yipe!!!’ Never happened again.

On the other hand, Josie is not a humper. But a few years ago a friend gave Jordan a black Philadelphia Flyers hockey jersey (Josie will not wear clothing, Jordan likes it), and we were totally shocked when she immediately jumped on top when we put it on him. I dont’ know if she thought he was a sexy hockey player, or maybe since it was just purchased from the doggy bakery and smelled like a fresh baked dog treat, maybe she thought he was a giant cookie. :->

It’s pee-pee sniffing at our house, too (or “stop it, you know them”). Scottie the Pirate gets very, very tense and defensive when one of the others tries to sniff, so we step in and stop it. He’s a pugilist and will fight at the drop of a hat. We do have our share of dominance humping, but it is usually between the girls (once in a great while, Dex will try it, but he’s so much into non-confrontation that he stops as soon as one of them objects.)

Sugar, the beagle-mix, is more often than not, the one trying to hump. She’s very in-your-face. She will entertain us by humping one of the large stuffed toys; she really gets into it for a minute or two then promptly falls on her face.

We only have issues like this when we have a foster and its called “Leave Barney ALONE!!!!” 🙂

Well, thanks to you, we call it schmeckel sniffing at our house too! Since they’re siblings, I have to add some Dueling Banjos sound effects whenever I catch them.

Eddy is our first male dog, so all of this is new to us! My daughter calls it “dinger sniffing”. I think we’ll change it to schmeckel sniffing, sounds much more sophisticated. Oddly, the only thing he has humped is TInkerbell pajama bottoms.

Moo would do that to other male dogs when we went for walks. First would be the pee-ing contest, then came the sniffing bit, and worse when Moo tried to lick! I’m totally embarrassed whenever he licked and would give him a nagging session thereafter, when we were alone.

I don’t care what they do with each other at home. I’m more concerned with what they do to friends and company!

No kidding … Jordan has been known to jam his head up under ladies’ skirts/dresses given the chance … or kilts, since I’m a piper and hang out with people who wear them. He knows the answer to “What’s worn under a kilt?” (PS- The answer is “shoes and socks” ;->.). He’s better behaved around people of either gender when they wear pants.

We would say get out of Casey or Dexter’s and now Daisy’s business, my husband would say their good business men and they would never miss a good business opportunity.

Well we adopted a new family member…. His name is (now) Bartles and he’s a Basset Hound. My husband just couldn’t bring himself to adopt another Beagle… We still miss Whisky Girl so very much… But Bartles is a very cool hound.
